THE MISSION

AT THE VERY FIRST AWARDS CEREMONY IN MONACO, 2000, LAUREUS PATRON NELSON MANDELA SAID: “SPORT HAS THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD. IT HAS THE POWER TO INSPIRE. IT HAS THE POWER TO UNITE PEOPLE IN A WAY THAT LITTLE ELSE DOES. IT SPEAKS TO YOUTH IN A LANGUAGE THEY UNDERSTAND. SPORT CAN CREATE HOPE, WHERE ONCE THERE WAS ONLY DESPAIR.”

These words would give birthmark the creation of  to Laureus Sport for Good.

Laureus Sport for Good uses the power of sport to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage, proving that sport can change the world.

While the Laureus World Sports Awards Ceremony has created a unique place for itself in the sporting calendar, Laureus Sport for Good has achieved acclaim for the work it does for underprivileged young people around the world.

Sport for Good now supports over 100 projects in 35 countries around the world.

FUNDING, TRAINING AND RESEARCH

Support comes in three forms: funding, training and research. These three ‘pillars’ of support ensure each project provides the best possible opportunities to promote social change within their communities.

Every programme Laureus Sport for Good supports is addressing at least one of the following six social issues, which are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

Health: Enhancing mental wellbeing and encouraging healthy behaviour change

Education: Increased access to and completion of education

Women and Girls: Promoting equality, empowerment and safety

Employability: Developing skills and creating pathways to employment

Inclusive Society: Creating communities which embrace ethnic, cultural and physical differences

Peaceful Society: Resolving conflict, promoting community peace-building and creating safe spaces
